The fall of the House of Usher and A Rose for Emily comparison essay.

The fall of the House of Usher and A Rose for Emily are short stories that have things in common, but also differences. The author’s in these story’s use the same style or genre; the Gothic style. They gave the lecture a sense of mystery and suspense, using details that can make the lector imagine the place where the story is being develop. Also the lector can have a picture in his mind about the characters that are in the story. And also other similarities, like the mood of the story, atmosphere, the house, death, traits, loves, etc.

The principal theme of these two stories is death. In both the families of the main characters are related to the death, we can say that they have some mental illness also. In the story of Roderick, his family has been from many generation with this problem called mental illness. For example, his sister. That in a certain way is described on the story as a ghostlike figure that has been completely overcome by mental disorder. In the case of the story of Emily we can assume that there is a problem of mental illness also because of the way she acts and by the way she was. In both of the story’s the main characters and their fathers died.

Also a similarity on both stories is the house. Both houses were mysteries and old. The house of Usher is described like an old wood-work and like a very creepy mansion. In the story, outside the house is passing a storm, the outside is also described with a dark and a scary lake. The storm that is occurring outside can represent the atmosphere inside the house. Besides the house of Emily is described like a mystery house. But outside is not occurring a storm, we can say that if we compare the storm of Usher’s house, the storm can be represented in the story of Emily like her father.  Because her father’s controlling attitude, alienating her from the rest of the world.

Another theme that is relevant on these stories is love. But these theme is not represented in the same way. In the story of Usher is a love of brotherly, but also we can observe incest because of the way the author writes and let us understand the story. On the other hand in the case of Emily’s story we can observe an obsessed love. By the way Emily expresses her sick love towards Homer because you could conclude that at the end she kills him.

In conclusion we can understand that in The fall of the House of Usher and A Rose for Emily were written by different authors that use the same genre to entertain the lector.  By giving suspense and not giving a final to the stories. The final of these two stories give you the chance to invent your own ending. Also by leaving you in suspense like if there was a to be continue in the story. These two types of authors do these final on purpose to attract the lectors by letting them want to read more of their stories.
